It's the best anthology I've seen in 50 years. It has detailed explanations of all the literary areas it covers, and sample student essays which greatly help freshmen transitioning from high school to college. The 13th edition is a slight but not a significant improvement. I have bought several copies to lend to students still waiting for theirs to arrive. Be sure to get the portable edition, which divides the heavy hard cover book into four paperback books which will save your arm by carrying far less weight to the classroom. These editors make it easy to learn and easy to teach Freshman English, which I have done for ten years. Rental is cheaper, but this is a book you will want to keep.

This textbook gives deep coverage to the areas of short fiction, drama, and poetry. It contains an astounding amount of information. There are quite a number of full stories, poems, and plays--although I have not counted, I would say that the number could be approaching 1000.The authors have done a great job in selecting writings to illustrate concepts. All of the selected writings are good, in the objective sense--they contain deep meaning. Of course, personal taste is subjective, and my experience was that some of the writings were thoroughly enjoyable, and none were quite intolerable.There are also questions after pieces of literature to help the reader achieve more insight than they might of their own devices, small sections that offer tips on writing, light biographies and case studies of various authors. Throughout the course I have made lists of various authors I found to be particularly interesting, for further reading on my own time.This singular textbook was, for the purpose of my class, equivalent to a boxed set which contains each of the treated topics in a separate book. The page numbers corresponded exactly to those of the books in the boxed set. I saved a good bit of money in purchasing this, and I much prefer a single textbook to a clumsy boxed set.I like this textbook enough that now that my class is done, I am still considering whether to keep it for independent learning or sell it to recoup some of the cost.

Great bound volume of literary texts and excellent break downs of plot and so forth. I have it only 3 because there is absolutely no good way to find the stories; no glossary, or table of contents with pages. My professor has chosen stories for us. So I find myself perusing through the thousands of pages searching for the stories.

I was required to have the 5th edition of this book for one of my education classes. I didn't want to buy it though, so I checked THIS edition out of the library. After reading it I realized I actually did want to buy it, because it has a lot of book lists and recommendations that I thought would be useful for my future teaching library. However, a 6th edition of this book was recently released, so I didn't want to buy the 5th edition for $80 when I KNEW that soon it would be worth almost nothing, so I bought this edition instead because it was less than $4!Also, I checked the page numbers up to the ones my professor cited for certain chapters, and the difference is very minimal. About 5-6 page difference. I also had no trouble finding the information my professor expected me to know, as everything that she was going off of in the 5th edition is also in this edition. I imagine the only real difference is that the newer editions have more up-to date book lists.I would recommend this book to anyone in the teaching profession though because it has SO many book recommendations and very useful information in general.

Amazon TextBook Rentals saves my bank account, and it's even better with free Prime shipping.As far as textbooks go, this is becoming a favorite of mine. I wish I had actually bought it. It has hundreds of writings, and my class is only covering a couple dozen. It's a great introductory textbook to some of the most respected and well-known writers for each category!For faculty, it's being used in my English 2020: Introduction to English Literature class. :)

Was WAY less expensive than the edition in the school store, and had SO much more to read as well, but lacked the information/assignments being in the same place as the edition my school was using. I had to snap pictures of the assignments from a fellow student, and all but one of the stories needed (but I'd found it online) were present.

I bought this book for my Intro To Lit class. It is definitely one of those text books you keep for future reference. Kennedy does such a wonderful job of collectimg some of the most interesting works out there from classics to modern. More only complaint is the paper. The paper is like Bible paper. It is very thin so note taking is a bit of a pain but I still highly recommend it.

Definitely agree with other reviews - the choice of paper is terrible. The pages are made of bible-style pages, almost thinner in my opinion. They will rip very easily so do be careful flipping pages. Much like bible pages, the pages in this book are see-through onto the back side and next page as well. I suggest inserting a white piece of computer paper behind the page you are reading if you find it irritating to have words bleeding through. The book is fine though you might want to save yourself some cash in buying this book - about 3/4th of the content of the book are public domain books that you can download via Amazon Kindle for free.

The Europe of 1914, at least for its bourgeoisie, represented the height of civilization, the “Belle Époque” if you will. And of a sudden the wheels fell off the track and the continent plunged into the darkness The Great War. British historian Ian Kershaw certainly proves George Kennan’s maxim that World War I was “the great seminal catastrophe of the 20th Century.” The war arose in the milieu of ethnic nationalism, territorial revisionism and increasing class conflict growing out of mass industrialization. These three factors would remain long after the war ended and into this pot would be thrown the crisis in capitalism induced by the Great Depression.Also arising out of the war was the successful Bolshevik Revolution that sent chills down the spines of the conservative elite. To Kershaw this was the most important event of the 20th Century because the very real fear of communism made opposition to the rise of fascism far more difficult in the West. It hardened the right and split the left.As a result the crisis in capitalism forced politics to the right rather than the left which is not too much different from what happened post-2008. Thus the West’s response to the rise of fascism was timid, to say the least with respect to Germany’s re-occupation of the Rhineland in 1936, the Spanish Civil War and the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia in 1938. All the while the great purge trials were going on in Moscow.Kershaw’s view of this history seems more deterministic than say that of Zara Steiner’s. To him there is more or less a straight-line between the Versailles settlements to the start of World War II. To be sure he gives credit to “the spirit of Locarno,” but not enough in my opinion. He also leaves out two chance events that may have altered history. The first is outside his topic and that was the premature death of New York Federal Reserve President in 1928. Had he lived, in the minds of more than a few economists the worst effects of the Great Depression might have been avoided. Within his bailiwick was again the premature death of German Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann in October 1929. If there ever were a German politician who could have stopped Hitler, it was Stresemann.Kershaw brings the holocaust to the forefront in Hitler’s war of annihilation in the East in his coverage of World War II. Simply put Hitler wanted to conquer the West, but he wanted to destroy the East. He almost succeeded.Kershaw finishes his book with the beginnings of the postwar recovery, the role of the Marshall plan and the start of the Cold War. By 1949 Europe is central to the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but its power is but a shadow of its former self. Kershaw has done an excellent job in portraying this epochal period that this review hardly does justice to.

In adfition to being beautifully written, this book makes sense out of the competing geopolitical factors contributing to both WW I and WW II. Kershaw makes a compelling case that the Russian revolution was the single most important event of the first half of the 20th century. His logic is flawless.I loved this book, and highly recommend it to students and scholars of these world-changing eras.

Not Kershaw's best work. The argument of a forty years war falls short and he himself admits so half-way through the book. Inside you will find zero footnotes or annotations and very little in terms of surprising scholarship. It is perhaps fine as an introductory survey into the Great War and its aftermath, but the idea of the inevitability of the Second World War offers too much of a presentist scope where hindsight is 20/20.

This is an extraordinary history of the boiling struggles in Europe during the first half of the twentieth century, a period marked by two brutal wars, each driven by the ambitions and goals of the major European nation states. These wars brought death and destruction to wide swaths of Europe, leaving millions – many millions – dead or incapacitated. Ian Kershaw tackles this vast subject with his customary great eye for detail and his even greater capacity to make plain sense out of a series of tortuously twisted facts.How could Russia have wound up on the Allied side of the second World War? How could the great culture of Germany have given life and support to a madman? How could the post-war world fall into such a tortuous face-off between the two great Allies, Russia and the United States? What can these two terrible conflicts say about the road ahead?I came away from this history of Europe in the early to mid-20th century fascinated with the interplay of force. These ranged from Germany, somewhat unfortunately located in the dead center of the European continent, relentlessly developing its military, commercial and cultural powers, a Russian state coming apart during the first world war and then using its immense resources to maul the German army in the second war and, more sadly, France, a major factor in the first world war but an exhausted and even somewhat pathetic relic in the second world war.The story of these two wars has been told many times. Kershaw’s history is very short on the details of the wars -- in fact, Eisenhower is not even mentioned in this 500 page book, the invasion of Africa and then Europe in the second war is nowhere to be found, the gradual involvement of the United States, of pivotal importance in both wars, is left virtually untouched. Quite clearly, this is not a military history. It is far more a discussion of national ambitions, political maneuvering, and – in the end – a scathing commentary on the vicious brutality of the Nazi regime in its efforts to reshape the population of Europe through the near-successful extermination of the Jews, one of the saddest chapters in the history of the world.The scarcity of a military view of these two wars is not a weakness. Kershaw knows all the details in both wars. He has written definitive accounts of Hitler’s rise and of the fateful decisions during the second great war. He is a careful and thoughtful historian of European affairs, with all of its complexities, in the second half of the twentieth century. In this absorbing book, he concentrates on the causes of the conflicts; he examines the people of Europe who made the major decisions that led to the wars and then led to the consequences of the wars. He deals with the histories of the major countries in Europe with an eye trained on what each country wanted from its involvement. Poland wanted security from the Russian bear to its east; France wanted safety from Germany; Russia wanted to expand its presence in the Balkans and ultimately into the heart of Europe; Britain wanted to keep European powers balanced, with none able to exert its unrestrained will; Germany wanted a larger slice of European land. Each had its own agenda.This marvelous history, as much a history of ideas as it is of the two wars fought on European soil during the twentieth century, ends with a look at Europe emerging from this chaos in far stronger shape than it had ever had been in the first half of the century, regaining its balance and now capable of a greater impact on the way the world works than ever before.

Amazon only shows the front and back cover of this rather impressive piece of both weapon history and use. The Bibliography on pages 232 and 233 demonstrates both the extent of the research, and the challenge. There are not many sources for any kind of saber, much less the rather distinctive Polish saber. This partly reflects the current, still early state of rediscover y of the ”fechtbuch ” - historic sources on the use of hand weapons, particularly for the duel. The oldest sources seem to capture the most attention – the result being the intense interest in I33 and the longsword of Fiore. Despite the long lineage of the saber, to Western audiences it tends to invoke the image of Napoleonic cavalry. This brings up the other challenge faced by the author – a relative scarcity of sources on the weapons of Central Europe, and a lack of knowledge of the theater. I was aware Poland was a major European power off and on for nearly two centuries, but until reading this work, I did not know the Thirty Years War largely missed the country. Fortunately, Mr. Marsden was quite willing to provide the necessary context.The extensive large format color photographs and illustrations make this work somewhat unique so far, in a book of instruction on the use of a historical fencing weapon. There have been many “coffee table” books, perhaps of similar size but not as long, depicting swords and other hand weapons, and some references on their use. However, this is an example, and probably a new example, of a “coffee table book” which can be used to learn a martial art. This book was a project, and a quick review of the five page illustrated “Acknowledgements” section shows that while the author was key, this was a team project, necessitated by the somewhat exotic subject matter, and the relative lack of English sources.Instead of relying on long quotes, there are a total of three chapters devoted to original sources: Polish, Italian and German. Reading a translation of an original essay or memoir from 17th Century Poland was more directly informative than reading an elaborate explanation. (Including the Messer from the German sources might be a “stretch”, since the relatively short, thick blade handles much differently, from personal experience.)The book excels in developing the context of the form of the Polish saber in both form and use. The irony here is profound, given the author currently being the President of the HEMA Alliance, and so many of its readers likely to be members of that organization, or similar groups. These practitioners go out of their way to differentiate themselves from those who attempt to create an immersive sub-culture – going so far as to ensure their club logo is featured prominently on kit, for reasons I suspect go beyond advertising. It was as if they were concerned re-creating court intrigue might somehow distract from “the art” they are so devoted to bring back to life.Slightly more than half of the work is under “Interpretation”, and this is where the format is probably ground breaking. In the vast majority of instructional books on swordsmanship, the readers must squint at a small grainy black and white image housed in a soon-to-crumble “perfect” binding. My version is hefty, hardcover and full color, which helps many, myself included, more quickly assimilate the image. If I want to look at the grip being used, I don’t need to wonder what a close up might have looked like, I can see it in the full figure photograph. The importance of the work transcends the specific subject matter – more books like this are needed for more weapons forms.

Richard Marsden's organization in this book is exceptionally well suited to facilitating the evaluation and refinement of his interpretation of the primary sources on the use of the Polish saber in the 17th century. Included are significant selections from English translations of utilized primary texts and breakdowns of techniques, each technique referencing the relevant primary source with an excerpt; the total effect of Mr. Marsden's work here is a thorough and rational foundation, assembled in light of practical experience and academic insight, which may serve as a valuable platform from which to launch into the next explorations of how the eastern wielders of the saber employed this weapon to build such fearsome reputations.Though I generally find Richard Marsden's work to be useful, I am especially impressed by his pragmatic and exacting approach to this discipline and his contributions to its rediscovery.If you are interested in learning the fundamentals of historical saber techniques, this is one of the texts I would strongly recommend.

A truly excellent resource that is understandable! It put me in mind of the many lessons my grandfather's taught me back in the 50's & 60's (they were as they put it some of the "last-honest-to-Gawd-sit-on-an-oatburner-cavalrymen". To me, that is high praise for this book, though admittedly there is none of the "spit tobacco in your opponent's eyes" techniques (LOL) but the skill set on saber usage this book teaches is tremendous.

This book strikes a great balance between anecdotes, explanation of sources and related material, and detailed depictions and explanations of techniques. Being new to historical European martial arts but having done sport fencing in the past, I found the book engaging and very useful. It didn't hurt that I'm fascinated by the history of this period and region as well.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history, swords, or HEMA, whether they are just getting started or a long time enthusiast. It's very well organized and even with the wealth of information and background, is a very quick and enjoyable read.

Clearly documented segments on the affiliated history, discussing the actual details of what makes up a Polish saber and how the weapon evolved, then detailing the different sources used to reconstruct the art itself. Moving from that into the actual discussion of the use of the saber itself, then detailing how this development can be brought into the modern HEMA setting.Read it once just for the pleasure of seeing how it was brought together, I'm expecting to be reading through this a number of times and gleaning more from it on each reading.

Full Disclosure: I know the author.The book is well written and has lots of good historical references and photos of their interpretations of the moments for Polish saber. It is written in an easy to understand manner, and covers this rather obscure fighting style with great thoroughness.

They layout is also well put together and easy to read and understand.One thing I will point out about, Amazon keeps saying the book is low or out of stock which seems like BS as it is a print to order book. Introduction

My strong belief is that education will have maximum value if knowledge and experience advance simultaneously regardless of quantity and complexity. This is the aim of LabVIEW for Electric Circuits, Machines, Drives, and Laboratories.

The groundwork for this book began about seven years ago, after I purchased my first copy of LabVIEW (Version 3.0) and a data acquisition card. Since then I have obtained more software and hardware components and integrated my teaching and research activities into LabVIEW-based modules, which have diverse areas of application varying from simple simulation and data acquisition to complex Motion Control. This book is a result of these studies. I now see LabVIEW as a verb as well as a noun, and many students who have utilized the end products say that they have improved their understanding of electrical circuits, machines, and drives.

It is a widely accepted fact that ac circuits, electrical machines, and drives are the most difficult subjects to teach and learn without some visual aids. Moreover, because in many institutions the time available for courses on electrical circuits, machines, and laboratories is severely limited, using custom-written virtual instruments (VIs) may conserve time by providing self-study tools and adding an extra dimension and visualization.

A first in its field, this book provides complete solutions for laboratory implementations and exposes the reader to manifold phenomena taking place in various electrical systems. It is an introduction to computer simulation of dc and ac electric circuits, electromechanical devices, and electric motors and drive systems and laboratory practices, all of which utilize VIs that are provided on the accompanying CD-ROM. The CD-ROM also contains a copy of an evaluation version of LabVIEW 6.0.

LabVIEW for Electric Circuits reinforces theoretical concepts and gives practical programming advice through examples of computer simulation in action and complete codes, which can also be utilized by potential developers. Furthermore, the book aims to fulfill the essential need for LabVIEW programming in this long-ignored area of electrical engineering--with hardware information, wiring diagrams, practical circuits, and printed circuit layouts all provided in the Appendix.

It should be emphasized here that discussion of the details of LabVIEW programming is beyond the scope of this book. Instead, basic or more complex theory of selected subjects is transformed in ways that learners and educators perceive to be useful and effective, utilizing a number of custom-written VIs. The book effectively employs a theoretical, a real-time, and a multidisciplinary approach to give readers a broader understanding of each topic, and it provides open-ended and highly interactive VIs that can be studied using computers.

While not intended as a detailed manual, LabVIEW for Electric Circuits provides sufficient basic knowledge to study the VI modules with a minimum background in LabVIEW. I have endeavored to make the front panels of the virtual instruments as simple and as close as possible to real-world operation. Furthermore, a considerable amount of time and effort was spent in developing cost-effective, high-performance hardware, details of which are all provided in the Appendix.

Each subsection is dedicated to a particular concept in an electric circuit and is accompanied by a VI. At the end of most subsections, a set of self-study questions is structured to introduce study guidelines and trigger further reflection. I provide a balanced coverage of fundamental definitions, various dc and ac electrical circuits, and magnetic circuits with animated operating modes of the circuits.

A considerable part of the book is necessarily devoted to laboratory experiments utilizing custom-written VIs, as the experimental modules are developed and currently used by the students at Adelaide University. Special attention is devoted to power electronics circuits involving basic converter topologies and to system simulations, which are related to earlier and successive chapters.

A number of dynamic motor and drive simulations are also provided. The essential principles of such systems, which underlie the performance of electrical machines and their applications, are discussed.

Using computer simulations without encountering the real devices is an incomplete experience since it will be only a toy (data), not a tool (information). Therefore, the book concludes with a number of real-time experimental modules that are intended to help students gain real-life experience.

The chapter topics cover a wide spectrum of areas in electric circuits, machines, and laboratory work. The chapters are organized to briefly introduce the fundamental theory and to provide alternative self-study tools (VIs). Note that the complexity of the topics gradually increases in successive chapters.

The CD-ROM that accompanies the book provides a wealth of supplements. The VIs supplied with the book form a veritable Virtual Electrical Circuits, Machines, and Drives Laboratory. Use of the VIs is mandatory for understanding the concepts covered in each study module.
